About Me
Hi, I'm Mike. I'm the entire team.
I’m the designer behind Ashburn Media. I grew up in Ashburn, I’ve been designing professionally for over 20 years, and I take on client work because I genuinely enjoy it. Your project will always have my full personal attention — no vague processes, no surprises.
Good work, happy clients, no drama. That’s the goal every time.
Background
How I Got Here.
It started, like a lot of things do, with comics.
In my early teens I became obsessed with Todd McFarlane’s work — his Spider-Man run, then Spawn — and spent most of my free time trying to draw like him. By the time high school was wrapping up, I had the sense to realize I probably wasn’t going to be the next McFarlane, but I knew design was where I belonged. I enrolled in the Graphic Design program at Durham College and never looked back.
After finishing I spent the better part of a decade working in-house at two different companies, learning what it actually takes to produce design that works in the real world. Then I went back to Durham College for the Internet Applications and Web Development program — graduating with honours — because the web was clearly where everything was heading and I wanted to understand it properly, not just fake it.
From there I moved into publishing, working with a significant publishing company before landing the role I’ve held for the past ten years — a position that has me collaborating with people all over the world on a daily basis.
Ashburn Media runs alongside all of that. It’s where I take on the kind of client work I find genuinely rewarding — helping small and mid-size businesses look and communicate as well as the bigger players do.
What Drives The Work.
Directness Over Diplomacy
If your idea won’t work, I’ll say so. Nicely. There’s a way to be kind and honest at the same time.
Results Over Awards
Pretty work that does nothing is my nightmare. Results-driven design, always.
Clarity Over Complexity
Simple is harder than complex. The extra time to make things clear is always worth it.
Speed Over Perfection
There’s no such thing as perfect work, just finished work. I ship on time, test, and improve.
