CYA Basic Power Course (18 Hours) $425
(PCOC included)
Fast Results
This course takes you from A-Z in one weekend. It is a great balance of theory and
practical and is designed to build your knowledge and confidence at the controls.
Safe powerboating is a lot more than just turning the key but this often isn't obvious
until it’s too late. You will learn about:
- Docking and casting off
- Engine and propulsion unit
- Safety requirements
- Safe refueling
- Weather and Navigation
- Maneuvering under power
- Emergency procedures
- Tide and Current
- Collision Regulations
Learning In Theory
Your time in the classroom will build your knowledge around the practical skills
required. What is "prop walk" and how does it affect boat performance. Can it be used
to your advantage? Basic aids to navigation and their impact on normal boat usage.
It's a broad and valuable syllabus...
Practical Experience
This is a graduated learning experience so you'll start out in a small aluminum boat
with an outboard engine. This allows you to build confidence about successful boat
handling techniques. As your confidence grows you will be introduced to a larger
inboard/outboard vessel. Practicing involves high-speed work on the lake, as well as
docking in unfamiliar parts of the harbour and manoeuvring in restricted spaces.
Boat License
As part of the course you will be trained for the Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft
Operators Card and sit the exam.
In the end we want you to have fun while you learn, after all, that's what boating is
all about!

Beyond The Basics
CYA Intermediate Cruising (5 days, live-aboard) $945
You've practiced your sailing skills and now you get to apply them on a much bigger boat. The sailing is only half the story though, as you embark on a live-aboard adventure there is much to consider. The CYA Intermediate Cruising standard covers all of the following aspects, and much, much more.
Trip Planning
A crew briefing will start the course and one of the first tasks will be preparing for
the voyage. Where will you go? What charts do we need? How much food should we buy?
Good preparation before leaving the dock may be the difference between a voyage you
want to remember and one you'd rather forget!!
Live Aboard
The boat becomes your home and you will need to agree on responsibilities, cook &
clean, troubleshoot problems and be proactive in checking the boats systems to make
sure you get home safely. You will be living in close quarters with your fellow crew
so you will hopefully make new friends and have some great stories by the end of your
voyage.
Sailing Skills
You will have plenty of opportunity to practice the skills you learn as you sail from
port to port, anchoring in secluded bays along the way. This course is an integrated
experience and you can be sure that you will better understand the balance and dynamics
of big boat sailing when you are finished. This course qualifies you for the
internationally recognized CYA Intermediate Standard, the recommended minimum
certification for bareboat chartering.
This course involves both practical and theoretical elements, but if you require
further theory in preparation of completing the exam, we also offer a theory course for
this… click here for more info..
CYA Advanced Cuising (5 days, live-aboard) $1050
This course is for the experienced sailor seeking to upgrade skills and develop extended passage experience, including round the clock sailing in a broad range of weather conditions. Develop technical and practical knowledge, including navigation and watches, cooking a meal underway and maintaining control of the boat in heavy weather.
Understanding the Theory
At this level you begin to delve into weather and sail dynamics: describe the progress
of a low-pressure area and the winds associated with the related fronts; where the
centre of effort is and why it is important; understanding the key boat systems.
Integration
You will be sailing overnight and it's you and the crew. As darkness sets in and the
horizon disappears the long night begins, the only thing guaranteed is that you won't
get much sleep. You'll be required to carry out your watch and take your turn at
navigating and helming. You'll need everything you've learned to date.
Drills
You'll be sailing in heavy weather and the performance requirements are extensive.
You need to demonstrate three Crew Over Board methods by day and night. An emergency
may occur at any time and whether genuine or otherwise, you need to be alert and
respond as someone's life may be in danger. Plus your instructor will be evaluation
your response!!
Prerequisites
- Intermediate Cruising or equivalent experience
- CYA Coastal Navigation
- Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate
- VHF radio certificate (Restricted Operators Certificate)
This course involves both practical and theoretical elements, but if you require further theory in preparation of completing the exam, we also offer a theory course for this… click here for more info..
